Today, the subject of artificial intelligence is one of the common subjects in engineering courses such as Computer, Control and Communication Engineering, and it is almost employed in all sub-categories of Civil Engineering. In order to consider all of the effective factors in an economical and optimized design, it is necessary to get rid of the classic and manual design methods and to find out a new practical one. In this paper, after a brief introduction of genetic and bees algorithms, their applications in the design of reinforced concrete retaining walls for static and pseudo-dynamic conditions of loadings are explained. The results of this research indicate that the genetic algorithm method is more accurate than the bees algorithm. Taking into account the programs written in MATLAB environment for both algorithms, for a much less time than the amount needed for the other common design methods, the reinforced retaining walls could be designed very fast and in an economical way for any static loading as well as for pseudo-dynamic loadings.
