چکیده This thesis examines Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey through the lens of Freudian psychoanalytic theory to explore how the novel’s characters, particularly Catherine Morland, employ unconscious defense mechanisms to navigate internal conflict and social pressures. The study addresses the gap in existing scholarship, which has often focused on Austen's satire and Gothic parody while overlooking the psychological dimensions that anticipate Freudian concepts. Guided by the research questions concerning which defense mechanisms appear in the novel, how they reflect Catherine's psychological development, and how Gothic elements symbolize repressed fears, the research utilizes qualitative textual analysis and close reading informed by Freud's structural model of the psyche and theories of defense mechanisms. The findings reveal that characters frequently rely on denial, projection, rationalization, displacement, repression, and sublimation to manage anxiety, maintain social harmony, or protect fragile aspects of the self. Catherine's misinterpretations, Gothic fantasies, and emotional responses illustrate the tension between her id-driven desires and the moral authority of the superego, with her ego gradually mediating these conflicts as she matured. The study concludes that Austen's narrative not only depicted individual psychological processes, but also reflected broader patriarchal and societal constraints that shaped these defenses. Ultimately, the thesis demonstrates that Freudian analysis enriches the understanding of Northanger Abbey by uncovering the novel's deep engagement with internal conflict, psychological growth, and the subconscious forces underlying human behavior.
