While extensive research has been conducted on emotion metaphors in English, the conceptualization of sadness in Persian has received comparatively less attention, and systematic cross linguistic comparisons between the two languages remain limited. This study investigates the conceptualization of sadness from a cognitive linguistics perspective, comparing Persian and English to uncover universal patterns and culture specific variations. The research employs a comparative corpus based methodology grounded in Conceptual Metaphor Theory, contrasting Persian data from the Dadegan Corpus with the established English taxonomy of Kövecses (2000). The analysis reveals a core of shared embodied metaphors (e.g., FLUID IN A CONTAINER, NATURAL FORCE, ILLNESS, BURDEN, LIVING ORGANISM, LACK OF HEAT) alongside significant divergences; Persian exhibits a richer array of unique, externalizing metaphors (e.g., EDIBLE, DIRT/SOIL, WORN, TEMPORAL, EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL FORCE) compared to English’s more internalized model. The study concludes that these distinct conceptual systems reflect deeper cultural models of self and emotion, with direct implications for addressing cross cultural misunderstanding and for designing culturally aware pedagogical approaches in EFL/ESL contexts.
