Abstract

Samar Al-Attar's artistic endeavor, Lina: Portrait of a Damascene Girl, stands as a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of identity, culture, and the human experience. This study employs an Altuserian analytical framework to delve into the multifaceted dimensions embedded within the artwork. Altuserian theory, with its emphasis on the interaction between the artwork, the artist, and the audience, offers a compelling lens through which to examine the intricate layers of meaning present in Al-Attar's creation. The study commences by situating Al-Attar within the broader context of contemporary art and her contributions to portraying the human condition, particularly focusing on the Middle Eastern context. Through a careful analysis of the visual and symbolic elements in "Lina," the study highlights Al-Attar's skillful use of color, composition, and form to convey a narrative that transcends temporal and cultural boundaries. The Altuserian perspective prompts an exploration of the artist's intentions and motivations, shedding light on how Al-Attar's personal experiences and cultural background intersect to shape the artwork. By delving into her artistic process, the study uncovers the ways in which Al-Attar's creative decisions, such as the use of traditional motifs and contemporary symbolism, contribute to the rich tapestry of "Lina." Furthermore, this study examines the reciprocal relationship between the artwork and its audience. Through an Altuserian lens, the analysis considers how "Lina" evokes diverse emotional responses and engages viewers in a dialogue that transcends passive observation. The artwork becomes a space for viewers to reflect upon their own identities, cultural contexts, and lived experiences, thereby establishing a dynamic interplay between the art object and its audience. The study also delves into the broader socio-cultural implications of "Lina: Portrait of a Damascene Girl." By drawing upon Altuserian theory's emphasis on the role of art in society, it explores how Al-Attar's work contributes to conversations about cultural heritage, the portrayal of women, and the preservation of narratives in the face of social and political upheaval. "Lina" serves as a poignant commentary on the resilience of the human spirit and its ability to navigate complex challenges. In conclusion, this Altuserian study of "Lina: Portrait of a Damascene Girl" by Samar Al-Attar underscores the artwork's profound significance as a vehicle for exploring interconnectedness – between artist and audience, tradition and modernity, and personal and collective narratives. Through its comprehensive analysis, this study contributes to a deeper appreciation of Al-Attar's artistic prowess and the enduring power of visual storytelling to transcend cultural boundaries and foster meaningful dialogue.
