Alienation, as a significant human issue, has been widely discussed in various sciences and literature. This comparative study attempts to analyze alienation presented in the selected short stories by Katherine Mansfield and Bijan Najdi. The similarities and differences in their depiction of alienation has been pointed out. This study is based on Richard Schacht’s theory of alienation as two forms of discord. Schacht introduces two types of alienation: S-alienation and O-alienation. The former indicates a mental dissatisfaction toward something in life and the latter presents a lack of integration, or a sort of dysfunction at the societal level. Six stories from each writer have been selected chronologically and analyzed through a detailed reading. The results indicate that the alienation presented by the two authors is compatible with different types of alienation introduced by Schacht. The majority of Katherine Mansfield’s selected short stories, 66.67%, present O-alienation. While the majority of Bijan Najdi’s selected short stories, 83.33%, present S-alienation.
