Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with prebiotic (Fructomix) and organic acids (Orgacid), either singly or in combination, on growth performance and blood lipid parameters of broilers. Birds were offered either a corn-soybean meal basal diet (control) or the basal diet supplemented with 1 g/kg Fructomix (FM), 2 g/kg Orgacid (OA) or a mixture of 1 g/kg FM and 2 g/kg OA (FM+OA). A total number of 200 one-d-old male broiler chicks were randomly divided into 20 experimental units. Body weight gains (BWG) and feed intake (FI) of broilers were measured during the whole experimental period and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated by Feed (kg)/BW (kg). At 42 days, blood samples (10 samples per treatment) were taken for measuring blood lipids analysis. During the entire growth out period, diets FM and FM+OA improved BWG and FCR compared to control diet (p<0.05). Birds fed FM diet also showed the lower (p<0.05) concentrations of serum cholesterol and triglyceride compared with control birds at 42 days of age. However, there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in FI and serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol among experimental groups. In conclusion, the present data indicate that administration of prebiotic (FM) alone or in combination with organic acid could improve growth performance. Furthermore, supplementing of diets with prebiotic supplementation positively influenced lipid metabolism.
