Abstract

According to the experiments that are carried out so far, and according to the many of the reports by other researchers worldwide, it is impossible to directly add Ti into the pure Mg melt and Ti is not soluble in the pure Mg. However, it is possible to use some alternative methods for addition of Ti into the Mg alloys. During the current project and for reduction of the TiO2 powder by Mg melt, Al (in the form of powder) was used as catalyzer to facilitated the reduction of TiO2 that cannot be reduced by simple addition of pure TiO2 on or into the Mg melt. Furthermore, it is important to notice that the reduced Ti is not soluble in Mg melt. Therefore, again Al was added to the Mg melt to react with the reduced Ti to male Al-Ti compounds (intermetallics). The final alloy that contains the Al-Ti intermetallics was used for making Al alloys and it was observed that addition of the new master alloy instead of addition of Ti improved the ultimate tensile strength and elongation percent of the alloy significantly
