Abstract

Abstract Many studies have shown different pollution effects on growth, development and morpho-biometrical parameters of pollen grains in plants. This study shows Shazand Thermal Power Plant, Iran pollution effects on pollen characters in 7 collected Legumes from the Power Plant area in comparison with control. Controls were collected from 10 km distance of the Power Plant. Plants identified using available references and herbarium vouchers were also prepared. Pollen grains were studied using Muntezing's acetocarmin and Acetolysis methods. Polynological characters such as normality and stainability percentages, equatorial diameter (E), polar axis length (P), P/E and log P/E were studied for each sample. Data were analyzed by one and two tailed tests using SPSS. Results showed the most abnormal pollen grain number and minimum stainability in polluted Glycyrrhiza glabra L. Pollen grains of Onobrychis transcaspica Grossh. and Robinia pesudoaccasia L. species had the most fertility. Also polar axis length and equatorial diameter in all of polluted plant pollen grains showed significant reduction comparing to controls.
