Abstract

Abstract: TiO2 hollow spheres with average size of 500 nm were prepared using the carbon spheres templates. Small TiO2 nanocrystals with 20 nm size were also prepared by hydrothermal method in acidic autoclaving pHs. A layer of TiO2 nanocrystals was deposited on FTO glass substrates and sensitized with CdS nanocrystals through a SILAR process. The number of sensitizing cycles was also altered in the experiments. The fabricated structure was applied as a simple photoanode of the quantum dot sensitized solar cells. Similar photoanode with an over-layer of TiO2 hollow spheres was also fabricated. Then the effect of increased light scattering on the photovoltaic performance of the cells was investigated. According to the results the maximum efficiency was related to the cell with a modified photoanode with a TiO2 hollow spheres over-layer and 7 cycles of CdS sensitization. The corresponding efficiency was also increased about 76% compared to that of the similar cell without the light scattering layer. This was attributed to the higher light harvesting efficiency due to the increased path length of the incident light within the photoanode.
