Abstract

Pragmatics which is an important field regarding language learning, is the study of relationship between language ant context which are “grammaticalized or encoded in the structure of language” (Levinson, 1983:9). In this study, Searle’s (1976) speech acts model and Van Ek’s (1990) language function categories are chosen to analyze Iranian High School Textbooks, Prospect 1, 2, and 3, and Vision 1 and 2. It is aimed to show which speech acts and language functions are used in the conversation of these English textbooks. It is found that based on Searle’s (1967) model, those speech acts of Assertive ones are computed as the most frequent used speech acts based on average amounts of speech acts in all five books. On the contrary, Declarative types of speech acts are calculated as %0. The next most frequent speech acts are reported as Directive, Expressive, and Commissive ones representatively. Based on Van Ek’s (1990) category of language functions, the most frequent used language function is Reporting and the least one is Intention. The next most frequent language function is Asking and Socializing representatively. This study will be useful for teachers because it informs them about lack of sufficient types and amounts of speech acts and language functions in Iranian English Textbooks.
