Abstract

IV ABSTRACT Conversation analysis as an inductive, micro analytic and a qualitative method for studying language attempts to find a way to analyze the human`s communication with the distinctive feature of recording the naturally occurring conversation. This study aims investigating the types of CA aspects in the discourse of Iranian EFL classrooms as well as finding the most frequent ones. To achieve this goal,17 students who were studying at English Literature course in BA, in ARAK University , participated and based on CA`s method , classroom discourse was recorded and transcribed. It was found that , the types of Adjacency pairs except ,compliment-acceptance , complaint- apology and threat-counter-threat were used in the discourse of EFL classroom in Arak university besides 3 types of Repair including : self-initiated-self -repair , other initiated -self-repair and other-initiated-other-repair . In the case of topic management, topic initiated, topic shading, Renewal, insert and unexpected shift were identified while in turn- talking, many samples of talking the turn, holding the turn and yielding the turn were found. From a pedagogical stand point some implications for teachers, students and researchers are suggested in this study. This study helps teachers to facilitate the teaching-learning process in classroom interaction, since CA and classroom interaction are complementary in procedures of developing EFL proficiency.
