The study of masculinities in literature is of paramount importance as it offers valuable insights into the construction, representation, and evolution of gender identities within different cultural contexts. By examining how male characters are portrayed, the exploration of masculinities provides a deeper understanding of societal norms, power dynamics, and expectations related to gender roles. Such analysis also helps to challenge and deconstruct traditional notions of masculinity, highlighting the diverse and complex ways in which men navigate their identities and relationships in various narratives. This thesis critically examines the portrayal of masculinity in Ian McEwan's renowned novel, Atonement, through the lens of R.W. Connell's theory of masculinities. By delving into the multifaceted male characters within the novel, the study aims to explore their behaviors, attitudes, and relationships to discern how they conform to or deviate from traditional societal norms of masculinity. The research applies Connell's theoretical framework to shed light on the complex and nuanced representations of masculinity prevalent in the early 20th-century British society depicted in Atonement. This study employs a qualitative, analytical, and descriptive approach to explore the representation of masculinity in Ian McEwan's Atonement. By closely examining textual evidence, character behaviors, and interactions, the research uncovers the various dimensions of masculinity in the novel. It delves into the struggles and pressures faced by male protagonists as they grapple with societal expectations and seek to embody or challenge traditional male roles. The study contributes to a broader understanding of gender dynamics in literature and offers valuable insights into the complexities of masculinity in early 20th-century British society.
