Abstract

The present study has studied the representation of nature in American English File series by Arran Stibbe’s model of ecolinguistics. Aaron Stibbe believes considering ecological issues caused by human over-consumption, this planet needs profound changes to be healed. This profound change needs a different society and people who have different view towards nature. He believes that there are stories in our minds that we live by. We use these stories in our daily lives without even being aware of them. So the way to change human view to the world is to change these stories, but the first step is to know them. As textbooks play a critical role in learning, I chose one of the well-known textbooks as the material for this study. For the purpose of this study, at first, I chose texts which are directly or indirectly related to nature. Then I tried to reveal the underlying stories in the texts. According to this model, there are 8 types of stories. The stories are conveyed through different linguistic features like vocabularies, grammatical structures, figures of speech, intertextuality, genres, relationship between words and clauses, transitivity assumption and presupposition, and how events are represented. The results of this study show that there is not a specific attention to the nature and natural phenomena in the selected textbook series and the ecosophy of the textbook series is the domination of man over nature and human ownership of the natural environment.
