Abstract

The present textbook does not claim to be unique at all compared to similar ESP textbooks published recently. However, it has tried to produce materials systematically based on principles of studies in ESP. First, it has selected 160 the most essentially and frequently used words in literary books and classes. Learners are provided with opportunities to practice and translate the words, which they are expected to be familiar with, into their Persian language. The second specification of the textbook is the inclusion of both authentic and pedagogical texts written by native and non-native expert writers in literature. This might probably enable the learners to tackle problems when encountering and reading these two kinds of texts. The other point worthy to mention is giving special attention to content schemata that claims high degree of content familiarity by the readers makes reading comprehension more effective. It is assumed that learners’ familiarity with the materials in the second language will function as a head start for them and eventually enhance their linguistic knowledge in all academic levels. The variety of content is such that it covers issues like literary criticism, history of literature, literary schools, novels, poetry, drama, and famous Iranian literary excerpts. Eventually, the exercises designed at the end of each chapter are in line with the principles of evaluation like integrative and discrete-point testing. Furthermore, they follow the points suggested in the studies on mental processing while readers are engaged in different tasks including recognition, comprehension, and production in dealing with vocabulary, parts of speech, language practice, translation, and the cloze test.
