Abstract

This paper introduces a new model for prediction of tensile properties of Al A357 castings in the form of UTS (MPa) = a + b ln (G/√Ṫ) and El (%) = c + d ln (G/√Ṫ). While previous models use only SDAS for prediction of tensile properties of the castings, the present model uses G (temperature gradient at solidification front) to evaluate the difficulty of liquid metal feeding and formation of microshrinkages and Ṫ (cooling rate of solidifying alloy) to provide information about SDAS. The proposed model has been developed based on the data from a series of defect free plates and later was applied for prediction of tensile properties of new castings from A357 alloy. It was found that the model successfully predicts the tensile properties of cast Al A357 alloys.
