Abstract

As the first human art in the form of narrative, storytelling has always been considered to make sense of the humans’ new experiences. Due to the potential of digital platforms, the emergence of digital technologies, especially social networks, has influenced story and storytelling. Since modern social networks like Instagram have influenced the way people share their stories, creating and studying media-conscious narratives make, called ‘digital stories’ in the digital era, have gained insights into innovative thinking about their nature and performance. Focusing on Instagram English posted narratives concerning individual experiences on getting survived from Covid-19, this study explores how digital narratives are perceived and constructed by individuals on Instagram. As for methodology, cognitive narratology approach is used to seek a deeper understanding of the structure of narratives based on the perceptual characteristics and mind related aspects of the posted stories. As for data collection, English sample narratives are collected and analyzed via random hashtag (#). The results indicate that various structural elements, including characterization, focalization, plot, and the perceptual mental model of the narrative worlds have been influenced by the digital medium environment.
