Abstract

This study delves into the stylistic aspects of power shift in David Mamet's renowned play, Oleanna, employing Conversation Analysis (CA) as its primary methodological framework. Through an exploration of the characters' interactions, discourse patterns, and linguistic strategies, the research aims to shed light on the intricate dynamics of power within the play's central relationships. The study employs a qualitative approach, focusing on meticulous analysis of selected dialogues and exchanges between the two main characters, John and Carol. By employing CA, the research seeks to uncover the subtle linguistic cues and conversational mechanisms that underpin the shifts in power between the characters throughout the narrative. To ensure a comprehensive understanding, the study draws upon a multidisciplinary framework encompassing literary criticism, linguistics, and sociological theories. The results of this thesis reveal intriguing patterns in the stylistics of power shift within David Mamet's " Oleanna. The study identifies a pronounced power imbalance between the characters John and Carol. John, the professor, initially holds a dominant position due to his authority and higher social status. In contrast, Carol, the student, starts from a relatively weaker position. The analysis uncovers various linguistic strategies employed by both characters to assert power and gain control during their interactions. John utilizes condescending language, interruptions, and complex sentence structures to maintain his dominance. On the other hand, Carol employs indirect challenges, assertive language, and emotional appeals to challenge his authority and elevate her position.
