Abstract

The present study was intended to find possible similarities and differences in trajector/landmark alignment between English and Persian. To do so, an English text (Willian Faulkner's The sound and the Fury) and its Persian translation (by Saleh Hosseini) were chosen as the samples. As the first step all English prepositions and their corresponding equivalents in the target text were listed and the frequencies were calculated. Subsequently, in, as one of the frequent prepositions in the English sample was studied qualitatively. In spite of the presence of some differences between English and Persian concerning trajector/landmark alignment, the study showed greater amount of similarities between the two languages while the differences can be great case studies for further research. Some implications for TEFL and more specifically teaching grammar were presented too.
