Abstract

The aim of the present work was to assess the effect of different concentration eggplant peel (solanum melongena) extract (SM) on the viability after cryopreservation of ram spermatozoa with the cryopreservation processes. Five farahani rams (2–3 years old) were used. The animals were general health status. Pooled semen were composed of Tris based extender, egg yolk, and glycerol in control and extract supplemented freeze-dried extender which was containing one of the following extracts: 0.2 decade (ml), 0.4 decade, 0.6 decade and 0.8 decade and control group without any extract. Semen samples were assessed for sperm viability. Better sperm viability was observed in 0.2 decade/ml extract and was significantly higher up to after frozen-thawed than other groups (P<0.05). Although, addition Higher levels of eggplant peel extract 0.8 decade/ml had adverse effects on all the sperm viability quality and significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the viability of ram sperm. This study showed that SM supplementation in semen extenders, can improve the viability characteristic after thawing ram semen.
