Abstract

Nowadays, due to the increase of anionic pollutants in water sources, the development of cationic adsorbents is very necessary for the effective removal of this type of pollution. In this study, a cationic porous organic polymer was synthesized via Schiff base condensation. Various characterization techniques including FT-IR, XRD, TGA/ DTG, SEM, EDS, TEM, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and zeta potential were used to identify and confirm the structure of the synthesized cationic porous organic polymer. Subsequently, the performance of the synthesized polymer as an adsorbent for the removal of nitrate and phosphate anions was investigated, and the results showed ideal removal efficiency for nitrate (87.3%) and phosphate (97.5%) ions. According to the correlation coefficients (R2= 0.9984 and 0.9879 for nitrate and phosphate ions, respectively), the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption kinetics of nitrate and phosphate anions by cationic porous organic polymer was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The data obtained from thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic.
