Abstract

The present study analyzes Charles Dickens’s Martin Chuzzlewit (1844) through the lens of psychoanalytic theory. In Freudian psychology human mind is composed of three elements: the id, the ego, and the superego. These elements work together to create multifaceted human behaviors; Consciousness refers to the awareness of one's presence in relation to their immediate environment, both internal and external, which forms the basis of human conduct and emotions. The three interact in ways that have a powerful influence on an individual. Each element of personality emerges at different points in life. This study aims to investigate how various forms of social conventions, difficulties, and external forces impact the characters' mental state. The researcher aimed to analyse the psychological development of its characters, including Young Martin Chuzzlewit, a narcissistic and egocentric protagonist. The study highlights the interplay between the characters' id, ego, and superego, revealing hidden drives and the complex relationship between There are three different levels to human mind, according to Sigmund Freud: the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious. There is some overlap and correspondence between his concepts of the ego, superego, and id on each of these levels, using Sigmund Freud's (1923) “psychoanalytic theory".
