Abstract

The use of mineral fireproofing coating (spray-applied fire-resistive material, SFRM) is one of the most important approaches employed to strengthen structures, especially steel structures exposed to fire. Columns are a major building component, so the use of fireproofing coatings for columns may be necessary. The required thickness of the fireproof coating for some kinds of columns was extracted from experimental results. The use of numerical methods is an attractive alternative to costly experimental studies. In this research, concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns were considered as one of the most widely used types of columns in terms of fire vulnerability. Thus, the appropriate thickness of a type of mineral-based fire-retardant coating for CFT columns was determined using the finite element model. The numerical results were validated in several steps, and showed that this technique can be used as a rapid and reliable approach for computing the thickness of SFRM for CFT columns.
