Abstract

Carnation is one of the most important and the most consumed cut flowers worldwide. In this research, the effects of ecofriendly compounds including chitosan (25 and 50 mg L-1), thymol (25 and 50 mg L-1) and green silver nanoparticles (25 and 50 mg L-1) in comparison to control (distilled water) and sucrose (2%) were investigated on postharvest of cut carnation ‘‘Tabor.’’ Experiment was carried out as completely randomized design with three replications. Evaluated characteristics were vase life, relative fresh weight, relative solution uptake, chlorophyll contents and ion leakage of leaves and petals tissues. Results showed that the vase life of cut carnations was extended by the addition of either 25 or 50 mg L-1 chitosan (17 days) or either 50 mg L-1 green silver nanoparticles (15.7 days) as compared with control (10 days). The effects of different treatments on relative fresh weight (except for third and fourth days) and relative solution uptake were significant in evaluated days as well. Although chlorophyll content was not changed significantly, all compounds significantly (P\0.05) maintained the ion leakage of petals.
