Abstract

In this study, the effect of suspended load transport on the characteristics of hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel was investigated experimentally. Sediment concentration and initial Froude numbers in the range of 0.42%-16.15% and 2.5-8, respectively, were considered. Tow grain sizes 0.15 and 0.03 mm were used in the experiments. Hydraulic jump characteristics including velocity and concentration distributions, length of jump, the sequent depth ratio and the energy dissipation were studied for both the smooth and rough channel beds. The results showed that the sequent depth ratio and length of the jump at the presence of suspended sediment are smaller than those due to clear water flow. It was also found that the reduction of sequent depth ratio and the jump length are more in rough beds.
