Abstract

Resilience is an essential measure in seismic evaluation of structures carrying green roofs. Deployment of green roof systems is a popular approach among architects and engineers to enhance the per capita green space and to improve the environmental quality of built infrastructure. Intensive green roofs, as opposed to extensive types, impose substantial mass on the structure and need extensive maintenance. The additional mass has a direct influence on the dynamic behavior of the structure, and hence building codes require seismic evaluation of structures carrying green roofs. Accurate seismic assessment of these structures has high computational costs. Endurance time (ET) is a new method that has been introduced as a fast and efficient tool for time-domain dynamic analysis, with some reservations in nonlinear analysis. This paper investigates the capability of ET method for treating nonlinearity in seismic behavior of green roofs due to their inherent mass irregularities as a measure of resilience. Analyses include a comparison between seismic behavior of structures with and without green roofs. Results indicate that intensive green roofs tend to increase roof displacement with substantial influence on the maximum inter-story drift ratio causing structural damages, which justifies the application of extensive green roofs for existing structures.
