Abstract

This thesis analyzes how the main male characters in Samuel Richardson's Pamela act through the novel in accordance with Freudian concepts of the id, ego, and superego. That is, the study shows how the male characters in the novel first acted on one of the three Freudian classifications of the unconscious. Later on, another part of their psyche becomes dominant and influences their behavior. The study concluded that the oscillation of male characters between the Freudian tripartite concepts in some cases is highly exaggerated while in other cases it is somewhat plausible.
